Beyond the Headlines: Why Every School Door Matters

When we talk about perimeter audits and school security, our minds often leap to preventing the worst-case scenarios—tragedies like active-shooter incidents or external threats.

And while these are unquestionably important, focusing solely on these extreme situations can make us overlook the broader value of securing all exterior access points.

Recent events at Deer Park ISD in Pasadena, Texas, provide a sobering reminder of the everyday vulnerabilities that schools face. Five individuals entered Fairmont Elementary School through an unlocked maintenance door, stole musical instruments, and caused damage to the property. In just 23 minutes inside the school, they disrupted a place meant to be a sanctuary for learning, exploration, and growth.

Thankfully, no one was physically harmed. But the effects of this kind of incident ripple through the community:

The tangible costs: Schools are often already operating on tight budgets. The theft of beginner instruments may seem small to some, but replacing them comes at a cost—funds that could have been used for educational programs or resources for students.

The emotional toll: Incidents like these shake the sense of safety among students, teachers, and parents. They remind us that the spaces where children are supposed to feel the most secure can still be vulnerable.

The hidden risks: Unsecured doors don’t just allow thieves access. They can also serve as entry points for weapons, drugs, or other harmful items—introducing dangers that could simmer beneath the surface for months before coming to light.

Michael Matranga of M6 Global Defense put it best when he said, "This is something that happens on a day-to-day basis." That reality is both startling and sobering. The problem isn't just that a door was left unlocked—it’s that such vulnerabilities often stem from preventable issues like outdated infrastructure, human error, or lapses in routine inspections.

As communities, we must do better. These smaller incidents, while not as headline-grabbing as an active threat, highlight the importance of vigilance in maintaining a secure environment for our children. When parents drop their kids off at school, they are placing their trust in administrators, teachers, and staff. They are trusting that every effort is being made to create a safe space—not just from major threats but from smaller, everyday risks that can also undermine the school’s sense of security.

Fairmont Elementary passed all its intruder inspections, yet this incident still occurred. This raises critical questions:

• Why wasn’t the alarm system active or operational?
• Why wasn’t there a notification system in place to alert authorities of a breach?
• And perhaps most importantly, how do we ensure that every door, every access point, is reliably secure every single day?

At the heart of this issue is a simple but powerful truth: A safe school is about more than preventing catastrophic events. It’s about ensuring that students, teachers, and families can focus on learning, teaching, and thriving without the shadow of insecurity hanging over them.
