John Spillers: Veteran Chief Campus Guardian

May 6, 2025

John Spillers, a well-known figure in Freer, Texas, is a dedicated champion of safety. With a career that spans 40 years in law enforcement, including 30 years in Freer and 20 years as the Chief of Police, he is a respected member of the community.

Although he has retired from the department, many still refer to him as "Chief" because of his leadership at the Freer Police Department. For the past two years, John has not completely stepped away from public service; he has devoted himself to ensuring the safety of students and staff as the Campus Guardian at Freer ISD.

Growing up John’s family moved frequently for work, but they eventually settled in Seabrook, Texas, where he attended League City High School in nearby League City, Texas. After graduating, he joined the Army, serving from 1972 to 1976, and continued his military service in the Navy from 1978 to 1980.

Later in his career, his commitment to law enforcement took him to Afghanistan, where he completed two tours as a police trainer from 2008 to 2010, further enhancing his leadership and tactical skills.

After a few stops across Texas, including jobs in San Diego, Hebronville, and Seguin, John settled in Freer, where he and his wife, Silda Spillers, raised their children in the very town he is and has committed to keeping safe.

When he's not on the clock, you’ll find him relaxing or honing his skills with target practice at the range.

What does John love most about his job at Freer ISD? The students, the staff, and the hours! he says. He enjoys being a part of a close-knit community, where every day brings new opportunities to make a positive impact.

You can often find John at his favorite local restaurant, Liberty Cafe, a place known for good food and even better company. It’s clear that he values his community, both in and out of work.

When we asked John about DoorCheck, his enthusiasm was obvious.

“It’s incredibly simple and effective, it makes my job easier. When I discover a problem, DoorCheck lets maintenance know instantly, no delays.”

He also loves being able to snap a photo and add a note on the spot, logging everything in real time so issues get fixed faster. He was also impressed by the affordable pricing, noting it was a big win for Freer ISD.

In his role as a school safety guardian, John Spillers exemplifies dedication and a deep love for his community, and DoorCheck is proud to be part of his mission to keep Freer ISD safe.
